Ik beschrijf mezelf als: A Literary geek looking for a person with some style and personality. Tired of sunshiney "Cali-girls." There was a time when a bit of melancholy in a man was considered a mark of distinction. Men like Byron, Hemingway, were esteemed for their gravity and frank estimations of society. How have we created this culture that believes that constant happiness is a state to strive for? Why is a plastic smile now the mark of normality? Paper villain though he was, perhaps the Bard’s Don Jon said it best, “I cannot hide what I am: I must be sad when I have cause and smile at no man's jests, ...laugh when I am merry and claw no man in his humour...it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain...let me be that I am and seek not to alter me.” Oh, I know the value of professionalism and of being politic but that does not mean that I have to like it. I do not seek to change the world but I wish it could be more accepting, even for its own sake. I’d love to find someone with whom I can share a sense of wonderment for both the Light AND the Dark; someone who does not fear tears or despair, who can sit quietly in the dark from time to time and be content. How we face death is at least as important as how we face life. Don’t you think?
